John Mathewson, MHSA, is the founder of Mathewson Partners, an executive advisory firm for CEOs and senior leaders navigating complex transformations and building what comes next in health care.

A nationally recognized health executive, he most recently served as Chief Operating Officer at America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), the national trade association representing companies that provide coverage and services to over 200 million Americans. At AHIP, John led enterprise operations, governance, and member engagement across a $5 trillion health economy, and launched the organization’s first coordinated initiative to strengthen health access, dignity, and service across all communities.

His 30-year career spans payer, provider, foundation, and trade association sectors. He has held executive roles at Kaiser Permanente and CIGNA, and served as Executive Vice President of Strategy & Operations for a nationally recognized integrated health system serving children and young adults with disabilities. He also served as Interim President & CEO of the DC Primary Care Association, where he guided a network of community health providers through a critical leadership transition.

John has served on numerous nonprofit, corporate, and association boards, including the Association for Community Affiliated Plans (ACAP), the DC Primary Care Association, and the HSC Health Care System.

Over the years, John has earned a reputation as a trusted advisor and steadying hand—guiding CEOs and boards through critical moments and ambiguity, when trusted judgment matters most.

He holds a master of health services administration from The George Washington University and a bachelor of science in chemistry from Howard University.
