Hilltop Researcher to Predict Individuals’ Risk of Hospitalizations from COVID-19

Hilltop Senior Data Scientist Fei Han, PhD, has been awarded funding for a proposal titled Reducing Patient Risk through Actionable Artificial Intelligence. The project is funded by UMBC and the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) Institute for Clinical & Translational Research (ITCR). Dr. Han will further develop the Hilltop Pre-AH Model™ event prediction algorithms to estimate individual-level risks of hospitalization due to COVID-19 and other communicable diseases for Medicare fee-for-service (FFS) beneficiaries across the state of Maryland. This predictive model will serve as a tool to help health care providers prospectively identify individuals at risk of hospitalization for the current and future pandemics. Dr. Han’s research team includes Hilltop Chief Data Scientist Ian Stockwell, PhD; Senior Data Scientist Morgan Henderson, PhD; Professor Lucy Wilson, MD, UMBC Department of Emergency Health Services; and Assistant Professor Zachary Dezman, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine and Epidemiology, University of Maryland School of Medicine.
