Hilltop Director of Analytics & Research Morgan Henderson, PhD, is one of five awardees of UMBC’s Center and Institute Departmentally Engaged Research (CIDER) grants this year. Dr. Henderson will partner with Dr. Jun Chu, Assistant Professor of Public Health in UMBC’s Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Public Health to improve our understanding of the use of Z codes in the Maryland Medicaid population. Z codes are diagnosis codes in the ICD-10-CM coding manual that identify social determinants of health (SDOH)—such as housing, employment, and food insecurity—that affect a patient’s health outcomes. Findings from this research will deepen our understanding of the health-related social needs of Maryland Medicaid beneficiaries and could inform ongoing efforts related to provider education, SDOH screening, and beneficiary-level interventions. As such, this project will offer significant value to the state of Maryland.
UMBC’s Office of Research Development established the CIDER seed awards in 2023 to increase inter-unit collaboration, particularly between researchers whose appointments are not primarily in an academic department and researchers within academic units. Dr. Henderson is the second Hilltopper to receive a CIDER award. To learn more, read the UMBC News article.
